THE ACADEMY OF ARTS

History
– It was the rich artistic heritage, as well as diversified cultural life, which at a point resulted in critically increased need for professional staff in the cultural and art institutions of Novi Sad. Fortunately, there had already existed the years-long educational tradition in these field, embodied in the Visual Arts Department of the Advanced School of Pedagogy in Novi Sad and of the Special Department of the Academy of Music in Belgrade, which had provided basic prerequisites for the decision to found the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. The foundation took place in 1974, whereby the Academy was conceived as a modern-style educational, artistic and scholarly institution, based on the latest achievements in art and science as well as the best traditions of the world pedagogy in the field of higher education. Soon, the Academy of Arts developed into one of the major university art institutions in Yugoslavia and one of the most successful faculties of the University of Novi Sad.

Structure – There are three basic departments: of Music, of Art, and of Dramatic Arts (the latter includes training for film, TV and latest audio-visual media). The Art Dept. is further sub-divided into sections that cover: painting, sculpture, graphic arts, graphic communication, new visual-arts media, photography.

Activity fields – Educational activities are carried out at basic and post-graduate (specialist, master's and doctoral studies) levels, plus complementary forms of education (skill courses, seminars, summer schools, contests), the Academy of Arts supports full manifestation of individual potentials of talented young artists, students of different profiles and interests, while comfortably allowing for their own free choice and decision-making regarding personal development. High criteria for admission test and prevailingly individualized programming and teaching of basic art subjects, conducted by outstanding national and international artists and scholars, have resulted in successful mastering of the complete curricula and syllabi, a very high passing rate, short duration of basic studies and high average marks.

The classes are carried out in the centre of Novi Sad and in two old buildings within the Petrovaradin Fortress.

Umetnici

There is, word has it, a Supreme Treasure, more valuable than the unique Golden Fleece. For a thousand years, winds have been gathering it, peace by peace, and saving it in the dungeons of Petrovaradin Fortress. The Treasure, made of ideas materialized - thanks to the chosen ones - as wonderful works of art, has ever since been a challenge to robbers. In the beginning, in order to save the Treasure from the Iazyges and other barbarian tribes, the mischievous winds used to move it every night to a different underground room. (Poor Romans, they lived and died in Cusum, without even being aware of the treasures surrounding them!)  As chances often are, even the Fortress, although it seems nearly endless in its magnitude, has its limits and its finiteness. One night, the winds realized they had already used all the rooms and that the Treasure was soon going to become available to the undedicated.  Then, a secret group of conspirators took over the role of guardians. In order to conceal their very existence – for, if nobody knew about them, how could they know about what they were hiding? – they thought out a number of public guardians: the Fortress itself was guarded by Saint Sebastian and Saint Fabian,  the military garrison was guarded by Saint Peter, and the patron of uniformed people was Saint Catherine. Artillery was protected by Saint Barbara, and the Lower Fortress was guarded by Saint John of Nepomuk. Nobody knows it today, nor will ever know it in the future, that the Treasure is actually guarded by the devoted conspirators from the the Academy of Arts.
