| Some people think that the winding stairway of the Fortress, the one running form St. George's Convent up to the Second Ludwig Bastion, were built at the end of the 16th century. They might be right, but if they strongly believe it, then for them, the story ends there. Others, more courageous and crazy, are aware of the fragility and transience of human life just as they are aware of the eternity of the Universe. The latter always tread every second step and do not stop when they reach the end. Why should they? The stairway of the Fortress is the stairway to Heaven, and the Heaven is far above, unreachable… However, why not try to reach it? The word is, if we can believe it, that Jovan Bikicki often used to walk up these stairs and, once, failed to stop, blessed by a whole suite of saints he had (re)painted. Even today, the theologians of the Fortress, when it comes to a discussion about the stairs, argue about the question: are there limits to the Sky, or not… |
