...Once a reporter asked me: "What kind of reverberation does the Fortress create to you, as a painter and writer?" "It is a Monument - I said – it is a Memory, mostly a latent (my) Question before the eternal scenario and scenography of centuries, remindful of wisdom, composedness, experience, not primarily of belligerence, heroism, often an idle one, or even insane. All our life, we carry – Memories.
The more distant the Fortress is from me, and it happens because I've been for decades, every day, very, very close to it; close to this grotesque decor looking over the Danube barrenly and lazily into the blue (vague) distance, which, even today, acts as a signpost to a passenger – the more at this place, in this place, under this place, with its tired umbra, sienna, ocher and chromium oxide, I challenge, every time with a new Painting, of different colours, the present, but also some future ages – aftertime." "And what does the studio mean to you?" – the reporter wanted to know. "It wouldn't mean anything if I weren't a studio myself. The Studio (and this Fortress as well) is a place wherein I hide myself while running away from something, but also a place I sometimes run away from! A small island in the Ocean of nervousness, mud, passions, noise and fury, on which it is, in solitariness, by impulses of all of my senses – created! Remember Milton: 'Solitude sometimes is best society...' I transform reasonable solitariness into questions and answers. "Is a painting worth without questions, without answers?" I am writing these lines in my studio. Silence. It's snowing. The window is opening a road. Through the curtain, a blurred globe of the frozen Sun is looking at me. The twentieth century has walked away with steps and traces of a stooped walker in the snow, under the winter locust grove."only one who is able to order his emotions systematically is an artist", says Henri Matisse (to me). It's snowing.  And a dawn is approaching, another one. What is the importance of a new day for me and for that solitary creature on the Fortress, above the city of many others resembling him, resembling myself? "Dawn is only a kind of a new whitewashing of the Sky" – I can hear Virginia Woolf.
