Miodrag Jelačić Jelača

Born in Novi Sad in 1955. Education: “Petefi Šandor”primary school, “Bogdan Šuput” Secondary School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. He lives in Novi Sad, most of the time at the Fortress, in his studio. Has participated in one-man and group exhibitions in the country and abroad.

Three years ago, Miodrag Jelačić - Jelača was neither dead nor alive. He knew neither Maria Theresa, nor the Fortress. To tell the truth, he neither drank nor painted. Today, he knows that the road to the Fortress is painstaking and long, and he knows something about Maria Theresa who actually never visited the Fortress. Could Maria know that Soldier-Painters were to inhabit the Fortress many years later? Could Maria know that instead of cannons and piled up cannon balls, the noise of soldiers' voices and sharp echo of jackboots, the Fortress was to be full of singing sculptures, and that the military barracks were going to turn into art studios? Could she know that in every room, instead of strict military orders and bursting commands, there would hang in the air unspoken, but stronger and more powerful words of the painting language that captures fragments of the visible and recognizable Nature? Could she know that, years later, Jelača – the guy from the Fortress - would rightfully argue that the realistic results come from the painting game in the Nature that surrounds us, the Nature that is an indirect motivational source transformed by Painters into a range of meanings of their own creative experience? Could she know that one of the Painters was to be Miodrag Jelačić – Jelača?
