A Nude and Old Olive Trees, oil on canvas, 60x45, 2000

He is sitting in the shade of the lime-tree, at the Fortress, behind the Academy; the weather is hot, unbearable, August; the wind is carrying scents of flowers grown up to the waist. There is not a single soul there –, nobody has passed by for days now. The Time has not stopped, it is turning back... Around him, the place is teeming with colourful uniforms of Austrian artillerymen. Below, everywhere, far into the distance, everything is white because of the tents and Turkish soldiers, all the way to Karlovci: "At the verydaybreak, the temperature began to fall rapidly, the sky above the Fortress became black, and it turned dark as if it had been the Doomsday. The storm arrived with heavy blizzard throwing the snow into the face of the frightened Turkish horde. Historians say that the battle lasted for four hours, the Turks ran away like mad, the Sultan was buried in Karlovci and the Austrian heralds rushed on horses to bring the good news to Vienna". Mića Uzelac is sitting surrounded with flowers, imagining all those guns, soldiers and flags, colourful uniforms and horses. He has decided – tomorrow, he is also going to take the weapons. He has to mow the grass that has grown rapidly up to his waist. He too has to pay the debt.
